Registration For All Classes Is Closed / Summer School Is Off To A Great Start!

With the biggest enrollment in recent memory, Highlands Summer School is bustling with activity and excitement!  Mr. White and the Highlands Summer School staff warmly welcomed all students at the Summer School Orientation on May 31, 8 am, in the Cafeteria.  Students got to meet all the staff members and kick-off their summer learning proper!  5 weeks is going to fly by so quick and next thing you know it'll be the start of the 2012-13 school year.  Have a great summer session everyone!

Registration Extended to Wednesday, May 30!

Due to high demand, Highlands Summer School will extend enrollment until Wednesday, May 30, 3:00 PM.  This is the absolute last day to register.  It is recommended to register as soon as you can as classes are beginning to close due to maximum enrollment.

Writing Workshop, Pre-Algebra Classes Now Closed!

Aquaponics
Attention future scientists, farmers, animal and plant lovers!  Do you like fish, plants, growing things, conducting experiments, protecting Hawaii's fragile ecosystem, or helping Hawaii become develop a more sustainable economy and agriculture industry?   Then aquaponics is the class for you!  We'll be working and learning about this important resource in HIS' very own aquaponics lab!  We'll be building composting bins, personal aquaponic systems, and new additions to our current garden!  We'll also be working on techniques to improve plant growth and even figure out ways to grow food through aquaponics at home.  Make sure to sign up today for the “freshest” class on campus!
Beginning Band
 Introduction to general musical concepts of rhythm and note reading while also learning a band instrument. 
*Period 1 Only
**For incoming 7th graders or 8th graders with no previous band experience or continuing 8th graders wishing to try a different instrument. No prior musical experience necessary.
Book Cooks
Book Cooks is an exciting course using a wide range of wonderful and fun children’s literature to explore a series of hands-on food experiences. The young chefs delve into a variety of books and cooking projects in an integrated approach that teaches nutrition, cooking skills, math, art, language arts and develops character.  This class will also encourage teamwork and self-evaluation.
*A lab fee of $20.00 will be collected on the first day of class
Intermediate Band
A continuation of musical concepts from the first year, including more complex rhythms and more difficult music.
*Period 2 Only
**For incoming 8th graders or incoming 7th graders with one year prior experience in band
***At least one year prior experience in band required
Mad Science Lab
Learn the science behind and get your “hands-on” experiments ranging from bottle rockets, hyrdroponics, self-propelled vehicles, ice cream & rock candy, ecosystems, silly putty, sundials, catapults, and more!  A material’s list will be provided on the first day.  Dr. Ahu’s Mad Science Lab is engaging as it is fun – sign up today! 
Math Camp  
Freshen up, sharpen math skills over the summer in a fun and dynamic way. Basic Math and PreAlgebra concepts are delivered through a hands-on approach. These math enrichment activities will help prepare you for 7th grade standards.
*Recommended for incoming 7th graders

Physical Education – Fit for Life 
Movement activity and games that inspire and develop physical fitness for life. Experience scooter boards, resistance bands, indian clubs, stability balls, Indo boards and much, much more.
*Please be ready for activity on the very first day by bringing a water bottle, towel, athletic shoes, shorts, t-shirt and sunscreen

Web Design 
Learn how to create your own e-portfolio using Apple's iWeb.  Having an e-portfolio is the 21st century technology showcasing your skills and abilities.  In this class we will use iWeb, Garageband, iPhoto, and more to create your own website complete with photo albums, video, and podcasts.  Students need to have a 4 GB minimum USB flash drive, and access to a digital camera (not required), a creative mind, and willingness to learn and explore new concepts.

Mad Science Lab Closed

The ever popular Mad Science Lab is completely full and is now officially closed.  We recommend choosing Aquaponics, the other Science-related enrichment course available.  Aquaponics is a hot topic in the news and around town.  Sustainability and recycling are the keys to our future and why not study and experiment with them this summer?!  Aquaponics would be great addition to your summer learning and enrichment -- sign up today!

FGA's (Frequently Given Answers)

Highlands Summer School is open to ALL current 6th and 7th graders statewide.


The majority of Highlands Summer School classes are for enrichment, no credit.  The only classes that are for credit are the Makeup classes designated for those students who failed a class during the regular school year.
Students will be assigned the first 2 choices listed on the Application.  Parents will be notified via email or telephone call if there is need to go to the 3rd or 4th choice due to a class being full.  
Native Hawaiian/Part-Hawaiian?  Pickup an Alu Like scholarship application for tuition assistance at the Front Office.
Registration will continue until May 18 in the Front Office between the hours of 7:30 am to 4:00 pm.
Sorry,  no personal checks accepted.  Cash, Money Order or Certified Checks only.  
The 1st day of the Summer Session students are to report to the Cafeteria for Summer School Orientation.  They’ll meet the entire staff, be introduced to the school rules and can ask ?‘s.
If your child is going to be absent or tardy please send a note to Mr. White or email HighlandsColts@Gmail.com.  It’s okay to go on trips and miss days or weeks of summer school as long as the student is enrolled in enrichment classes.  However, makeup credit students must be in school everyday -- attendance is mandatory for makeup credit!
Students are to come to school prepared daily with pens, pencil, paper, bag/backpack.  It is encouraged that they eat a healthy breakfast and also pack snacks and/or drinks.  
Summer School Snack Shack will be available during Recess (10:23 - 10:38 am) daily.  The Snack Shack can be found near the PE Courtyard, outside room C4 and will sell saimin, chips, juice, and much, much more.

Pre-Algebra 
Did you know that ALL 9th graders are required to take Algebra?  Take this super-fun Pre-Algebra class and impress your friends with your new knowledge and math skills!  If you're already registered for 8th grade Algebra this is the absolute best way to make sure you'll be on track for your fast-paced 8th grade Algebra class.  Even if you're not in 8th grade Algebra, take it anyways and get a head start for what you'll need in high school!  We'll learn all of the algebra concepts that you'll need to be successful in math...and we'll learn it in exciting ways, like with different apps on the iPad!  Don't waste your summer away...take Pre-Algebra today!

This is the place for the 'Write Stuff'!  Enjoy a summer enrichment course that will improve your writing skills in an atmosphere of fun and creativity!  This is a chance to review and improve writing skills for returning Highlands students and good preparation for sixth graders entering intermediate school next year.
