We Can't Belive It -- Only 4 Days Left! / Report Cards

The countdown has begun!  There are only 4 days left of Summer School 2014!  Well, time sure does fly when you're having fun ;)  The last day of Summer School 2014 is next week Tuesday -- July 8. 

If you are going to miss the last few days of school please notify your teachers in order to get your report card before you leave.  Official Summer School Report Card distribution will be on the last day of school, Tuesday -- July 8.

1st Day of Summer School + Orientation Is Tomorrow -- Tuesday, June 3, 2014!

Well, we're finally here!  The Highlands Intermediate Summer School '14 starts tomorrow at 8 am.  The warning bell will ring at 7:55 am and then all students are to report to the Cafeteria for our annual Summer School Orientation.  We'll introduce all the teachers and staff members, go over the rituals, routines, rules, and much more.  You'll then be dismissed to your first period classes for a full day of learning, enrichment, and...fun!  See you all bright and early for our first day of summer school ;)

Master Roster To Be Posted 6/2 @ Front Office / Class Changes / Refunds

Summer School students will not be receiving a Summer School Course Schedule via mail or email.  The way we do it here is old school!  The Highlands Summer School '14 Master Roster (students w/ classes) will be posted outside the Front Office at 9:00 am on Monday, 6/2 -- the day before the start of Summer School. 

Any changes to classes would be best handled by emailing Summer School Director, Mr. White asap at highlandscolts@gmail.com.

Refund requests can be emailed to Mr. White asap as well.  He won't be able to process them until the end of the first week of Summer School, after everything settles down.  Once processed, it'll take 2-3 for a refund check to be mailed to you.  So sorry for any inconvenience this may cause you.

We will be accepting Credit Recovery registrations from Highlands Intermediate students from this point on.  We're filled up and cannot accept any other Credit Recovery from outside schools.  We're so sorry for the inconvenience.  Please contact your current school's counselor for details on alternative methods for Credit Recovery.

Two More Weeks to Register for Highlands Summer School 2014!

Summer School Registration runs for 2 more weeks and closes Friday, May 23rd! Applications and fees will be accepted in the Front Office between 7:30 am – 3:30 pm M-F.  Don't wait until the last minute -- classes are filling up fast!

Both periods of STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) are officially closed.  Other science classes still open are Aquaponics (Period 1 only) and Mission Possible (Period 2 only).  Hurry -- there's only 2 weeks left to register!

Summer School '14 Registration A Success!

Thanks to all the parents and students that came out this Saturday for Highlands Intermediate Summer School '14 Registration!  All students that registered on Saturday got their primary class choices.  Some classes are almost full and we will be posting that information later this week.

We just want to remind all of you that you can still register until May 23 in our Front Office M-F from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm.  Do so sooner than later as classes will be filling up!

Summer School '14 Registration Day Is This Saturday -- April 26, 2014

Attention all incoming 6th Graders and 7th Graders!  Be there this Saturday - April 26, 2014 -- from 8:00 - 11:00 am @ the Highlands Intermediate Cafeteria to make sure you get the classes you want by attending the Summer School '14 Registration Day!  Be extremely productive during the long summer break and get a head start on the upcoming new year!  If you need an application you can  click here to download or you can pick one up at the Highlands Intermediate Front Office.

Please read all the contents of the Registration Packet carefully.  You can email Summer School Director, Mr. White at Eric_White@notes.k12.hi.us anytime.  You can call Mr. White directly at 453-6480 x310 from 7 am - 4 pm daily.  Or you can ask all your questions from the Summer School staff in person at Registration Day.

Summer School '14 FAQ's

We've gotten a lot of calls and emails this week so here are some recent FAQ's:

1.) No personal checks accepted.  Only cash, money order, or certified check for payment will be accepted.

2.) Space is limited for all of the classes so please come on Registration Day to make sure you get the ones you want.

3.) Students taking Enrichment Classes may take vacation time -- no problem.  Please turn in a note with your intentions any time before your trip.

4.) Anyone can register a student for Summer School '14 (grandparents, uncles, friends, etc...).  Parents and students don't have to be there for registration.

STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) Course Description Update!

STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) *UPDATED 4/2/14*
Be an Innovator in this course designed to introduce and support middle school students interested in science, technology, and engineering. Using their imagination and problem-solving skills, students create innovative solutions that address how we gather knowledge in the 21st century.
7th Graders:  Students will be introduced to the challenge of constructing and programming a working autonomous robot in the volcano and sumo challenges.
8th Graders:  Students will construct and program robot floats that follow the parade route while detecting other robots in front of them.  Student teams will also build their own robot to show off their costume and perform dancing motions synchronized to music.

Both grade levels will get a chance to compete in the Science Olympiad in various scientific disciplines, including anatomy, astronomy, entomology, and bridge building.  In addition to building a technology skill set in the process of putting together a visual display and oral presentation, students will leave the course with a solid foundation and resources that will help in future classes.  Be ready for a fun filled summer with daily competitions that will keep you excited for more!

Want to get a head start on math? Practice math activities in an interesting way that will prepare you for 7th grade standards or refresh the skills you have already learned. These math enrichment activities will help you get better at math in a fun and hands on environment.
*Recommended for incoming 7th graders, or current Highlands students who wish to improve their math skills

Highlands Summer School '14 Enrichment Course Catalog

The following courses are offered to all students and are structured for enrichment (no credit earned)...class offerings are subject to change based on availability.  If the course you chose is closed due to lack of enrollment, you will be scheduled for the next available class on your registration and will be notified via phone or email.

Aquaponics
Want to learn how fish can produce herbs and vegetables???  Aquaponics is the BIG thing right now as we try to find ways to protect Hawaii’s ecosystem and increase agriculture, even in the city.  Learn how to create an aquaponic system, conduct experiments, and maintain and grow our HIS Aquaponic Garden.  
*Period 1 Only*

Beginning Band
Introduction to general musical concepts of rhythm and note reading while also learning a band instrument.
*Period 1 Only*
**For incoming 7th graders or 8th graders with no previous band experience or continuing 8th graders wishing to try a different instrument. No prior musical experience necessary.**

Book Cooks
Book Cooks is an exciting course using a wide range of wonderful and fun children’s literature to explore a series of hands-on food experiences. The young chefs delve into a variety of books and cooking projects in an integrated approach that teaches nutrition, cooking skills, math, art, language arts and develops character. This class will also encourage teamwork and self-evaluation.
*A lab fee of $25.00 will be collected on the first day of class*

Highlands Baseball Camp
Singles, doubles, triples, and home runs!  What better way to enjoy your summer than to spend it hitting away during summer school?!  The HIS Baseball Camp, under the instruction of Coach Takemura, will focus on hitting, fielding, speed, and agility.  Limited space available.

Intermediate Band
A continuation of musical concepts from the first year, including more complex rhythms and more difficult music.

**For incoming 8th graders or incoming 7th graders with one year prior experience in band**

Mission Possible
Students will track a dangerous scientist around the world to prevent his release of a deadly microorganism.  This virtual journey will include scientific investigations in biology, chemistry, physics, environmental science and math with engaging hands-on activities to develop critical thinking and scientific problem-solving skills.

PE - Fit for Life!
It will be a far far better place to go to then you have ever gone, it will be a far far better thing you do then you have ever done....You will Get strong, get fit have fun.  Ride a trikke, balance on a board, ball and disk.  Never done it? Once Upon a Time…

If you want them to be more intelligent, read them more fairy tales.” ―Albert Einstein.  Through fairy tales in picture books, novels, and movies, we will learn what it means to truly comprehend an author’s message while using strategies that help young readers understand and retain more of what they read in all types of text. We’ll also create our own fairy tale using various technologies and develop presentation skills while sharing our stories.  We hope you'll join us on our quest for happily ever after.

Summer Bridge - Math for 7th Grade                                                                        

If you’re an incoming 7th grader and you want to strengthen your math skills and prepare for 7th grade math, this is the course for you!  Focus on areas like measurement, rational numbers, algebraic concepts, graphing and probability so that you’ll be ready for the challenges of 7th grade math.  This class is only open to students who will be in the 7th grade in sy 2014-2015.
 
Summer Bridge - Algebra Readiness                                               

The Algebra Readiness program helps to strengthen students’ understanding of basic math and algebra concepts so that students can succeed in Algebra 1.  Students who are going to enter Algebra 1 for 8th grade and students who moving into 9th grade Algebra can take this class to get a head start on different Algebra concepts so that they will be ready for the world of Algebra during the regular school year.  Focus areas include measurement, rational numbers, algebraic concepts, multiple representations of functions, coordinate graphing and probability and statistics.  This class is open to students who will be in the 8th grade in sy 2014-2015.
 
Ukulele Jam Session
Love music?  HIS Ukulele Program will be offering a ukulele class this summer.  This fun-filled class will be focusing on picking, singing (optional), and technology.  With our new recording studio up and running, the students will be allowed to experiment with recording and making their very own CD’s.  Limited space available.

Writing Workshop
This is the place for the 'Write Stuff'!  Enjoy a summer enrichment course that will improve your writing skills in an atmosphere of fun and creativity!  This is a chance to review and improve writing skills for returning Highlands students and good preparation for sixth graders entering intermediate school next year.
